Choose a suitable domain

Little Influence Easy to implement

When creating a website it is important to choose a fitting domain name. Here are a few things you should keep in mind when you choose a domain name:

  • The chosen domain name needs to still be free so you can register it.
  • Your domain name shouldn’t violate any third party‘s or company‘s rights. Large and well-known companies will generally have a prior right for domain names as far as the name is concerned. In addition, you should be careful with names of stars and celebrities (at least when you didn’t ask for permission first).

Good and bad domain names:

  • For company websites the company’s name would be most fitting as a domain name. Customers who look for their website in the internet will surely remember www.company.com easily.
  • It can be helpful to use the main keyword in the domain name, but it’s not vital. On the one hand it would give the visitor a first insight on the website’s topic. On the other hand it also makes sense to use short domain names that are easier to remember.
  • Short domain names are easier to remember.
  • Concise names are also easier to remember than long combinations or abbreviations.
  • Make sure to use well known and accepted top level domain (e.g. .com, . net).
